Counselor-in-Training Program: Leadership Development for the Next Generation

Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is more than just a summer camp opportunity—it’s a leadership training experience designed to prepare teens for future roles as leaders, mentors, employees, and team players. Through hands-on activities, mentorship, and guided reflection, participants develop the skills needed to thrive in professional and personal settings. While it’s not required, it also sets teens up for success to volunteer at day camp.

In addition to leadership skills, the CIT program emphasizes essential employment skills that prepare participants for future jobs. Teens learn the importance of being dependable by showing up on time, fulfilling commitments, and taking initiative. They also gain real-world experience in managing responsibilities, communicating effectively with supervisors, and understanding workplace expectations. These habits help foster a strong work ethic and professionalism, building a solid foundation for future careers. Learn more here.

Key Leadership Skills Gained in the CIT Program:

  • Communication Skills: Learn how to effectively communicate with peers, younger campers, and supervisors in diverse situations.
  • Conflict Resolution: Develop strategies to navigate challenges, mediate disputes, and promote positive outcomes.
  • Teamwork: Practice collaboration and leadership in team settings, building strong relationships and fostering inclusivity.
  • Time Management: Master the ability to prioritize responsibilities and manage tasks during camp activities.
  • Decision-Making: Enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills through real-life scenarios.
  • Mentorship Abilities: Gain hands-on experience mentoring younger campers and acting as a role model.
  • Adaptability: Cultivate the ability to remain flexible and thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
  • Confidence Building: Develop self-assurance through public speaking, leading activities, and taking on responsibilities.

This program isn’t just preparation for being a great counselor—it’s a foundation for success in any future leadership role. Whether participants aim to return as a staff member or apply these skills in school, sports, or their careers, our CIT program offers invaluable growth and development.
